Solana/Account Model/Introduction

In class, a student sat at his desk, spinning a pen between his fingers, eyes drifting as the teacher lectured. He glanced down at the pen in his hand, brows slightly furrowed, as if lost in thought. Then he looked up, his gaze sharpening, focused once again on the teacher.

The teacher placed the slides on the lectern and looked at the student with a relaxed smile, gesturing for him to speak.

Student: "Teacher, I think I'm starting to get a feel for Solana. Its account model seems quite unique. Could you give me a simple overview to help me understand what exactly a Solana account is? And how is my SOL balance actually stored on the Solana blockchain?"

Teacher: "Haha, of course! Solana's account model is both clean and efficient. You can think of Solana accounts as little storage units, each account is responsible for holding data, but they don't contain any execution logic themselves."

Student: "So you mean the accounts just store data, and the logic runs somewhere else, right?"

The teacher nodded lightly.

Teacher: "Exactly! Depending on the kind of data stored, Solana accounts fall into three main categories: regular accounts, program accounts, and data accounts. Regular accounts are your typical wallet accounts, they store a user's SOL balance, and that's pretty much it. Simple and direct, just holding and transferring SOL. Program accounts are more like smart contract hubs; they store executable code. Data accounts, on the other hand, hold the state and data generated during a program's execution, they control how an application behaves."

The teacher paused briefly, then added:

Teacher: "Strictly speaking, regular accounts are actually a special kind of data account, they're managed by the system program."

Student: "What do you mean by 'managed'?"

Teacher: "Ah, this is another key aspect of Solana. Each data account is controlled by its owner. Program accounts are managed by the developers who deployed them. This setup ensures both security and isolation for every account."
